When student affairs services started there were no job discriptions. Deans of men and women did their duties without having specific directions. We thank peoneers for puting things together after learning through tough experiences. People who are working for students affairs now need to have dialogue and to write for the benefits of the present generation as well as the future generation.
Chapter of the textbook "The Importance of Institutional Mission" focuses on the purpose of the mission statement of college or university. Student affairs personel workers have to serve students withim the framework of the mission statement of the institution. Mission ststement shows when the college or university was established its direction and its purpose of its existance. Therefore it is very important for student affairs workers to know well the mission of the school in order to serve better.

Some week ago we had 3 videos on orientation, do you think the video which were "poorly" prepared didn't focus on the mission statement?
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to note that those who started the journey of student affairs had no clear-cut job description, yet they managed to leave a mark for us to follow. Now, we have a well written mission statement that directs us as to where to move;we have complete job description that serves as a beacon which guides our work. We must take advantage of these and help achieve results for our institutions.

ReplyDeleteNdalawa, I do not think that the video which was poorly represented focused on the mission. This might be one of the reasons it was poor represented.
ReplyDeleteThe history of student affairs administration is a reassurance to us, that, with determination there is just no limit to how much we can achieve. Think of the the small beginnings with not even job description to guide. But today the story is different. With every necessary tool at our disposal, making it an exhilarating profession.
ReplyDeleteIt is intersting how well these pioneers did although they did not have a job description. They did what all of us need to do which is to care for our students. I am glad that in your posting you reflected on these pioneers. Now it our turn to continue to write their story of love and compassion. Thanks for sharing. Blessings!
